关于华人联合教会
华人联合教会的历史源于1903年。那时 J. A. Rose 先生在 Sparks 街的一个房间内开始了首次的中文学校暨主日学部。1920年，主日学部在龚先生的领导下，迁到 O’Connor 街。

1921年，这个小小的主日学部发展成为“中华基督教青年会”（简称青年会）。它座落于Lisgar街312-314号。此楼业蒙A. Pinhey姑娘花费$13,000.00购买，新兴的青年会筹得100元作为按金。这个场所首次成为侨界举行各样活动的中心。

在教会事工成长期间，一批传道教师受呼召加入事奉的行列。他们包括：陈保罗牧师、周龙兴先生、甄玉辉姑娘、董先生和司徒先生。这个不属于任何宗派的组织设有一个理事会，成员包括侨界领袖如周相先生、龚先生、司徒德伦先生、梁焯立先生、麦方先生、麦英先生、A. G. Rose先生、J. R. Day先生、H. S. McMillan先生、William D。 Noyes博士、R. G. Knox先生、H. C. Ellis先生、W. H. S. Martin女士和Lillan Crain姑娘。

1950年代，随着新移民法支持亲属团聚，大批华人蜂拥抵达本市。加拿大联合教会于是支持Winnifred Harris姑娘在青年会内的事奉，她曾经在中国担任多年的宣教士。

1962年10月28日，在朱锦池牧师的领导下，青年会正式加入加拿大联合教会。女执事是曾经在联合教会名下，到中国出任宣教士多年的Evelyn Ricker姑娘。当时还有其他领袖，包括J. R. McGregor先生和夫人、Paul McIntoch先生、A. W. McVicar先生、E. Johnston姑娘、M. E. Roe姑娘、E. Smith姑娘和马焕匀姑娘。Stephen Liao牧师于1966年从Winnipeg华人联合教会来到本教会事奉，直到1972。虽然青年会在1962年已经成立为一间教会，但会众数目仍然很少。

1973年2月，麦荣禧牧师来到本教会事奉。不久人数渐增，在Lisgar街的场所不敷应用，于是迁往397 Kent街第一联合教会的副堂聚会。从1975年到1982年中，教会经历了很大的成长。1982年，麦荣禧牧师离开本教会，去Winnipeg华人联合教会事奉。期间，已退休的Pervis-Smith牧师来本教会事奉一段时间。William Wan牧师于1982年来到本教会事奉，同时有Victor Chow 和Nancy Chen同工，教会继续成长和发展。1984年7月17日，教会购得原属Central Gospel Tabernacle 在600 Bank Street的堂址。新堂的购修费超过60万元，其中约45万元是堂址的买价，约15万元装修，可容纳500人。

1989年，因联合教会总会的同性恋立场，相当部分的会众离开了本教会。留下的会众虽然不赞同总会的立场，但愿意继续在这宗派内为神作见证，持守真道，从内部改革总会、回到圣经真理的立场。教会重新呼召麦荣禧牧师来事奉，教会得到稳固。1996年，来自香港的传道人T.K. Ng牧师来本会事奉了一段时间。之后，已在教会同工的Rod Bennett牧师继任，作为本会的主任牧师，直到2004年。教会在此期间又有稳定成长，近年平均崇拜人数有100多人。这段时间，已退休的Mel Newman牧师为本教会提供圣餐、洗礼、婚礼等事奉。

2006年，陈伟甡牧师担任了本会的主任牧师。

2010年，张云台牧师担任了本会的主任牧师。

2018年，屠传道担任本教会的实习牧师。

2019年，刘传道开始本教会的牧养服事。

A Brief History

It all began in 1903 when Mr. J.A. Rose opened the first ChineseSchool cum Sunday School in a room on Sparks Street. By 1920 the SundaySchool was moved to O’Connor Street under the leadership of Mr. Kung.

From the little Sunday School class, the Chinese Mission andChristian Association was formed in 1921. The mission had a congenialrelationship with Chalmers United Church during this infancy period. TheAssociation made its permanent home at 312 – 314 Lisgar Street. Theproperty was bought by Miss A. Pinhey for $13,000.00 with a down paymentof $100.00 raised by the fledging Association. It was in the premisesthat the Chinese Community first found its centre for variousactivities.

As the work of Christian Mission grew, teacher-evangelists werecalled to serve. These included Rev Paul Chan, Mr. Chow Lung Hing, MissRuth Yin, Dr Dong and Dr Y.S. Szeto. The Interdenominational Mission wasalso served by an Official Board, including community leaders like Mr.Joe Sheung, Mr. Kung, Mr. Szeto Art-lun, Mr. Leung Chak Lip, Mr. MakFung, Mr. Mak Ying, Mr. A.G. Rose, Mr. J.R. Day, Mr. H.S. McMillan, DrWilliam D. Noyes, Mr. R.G. Knox, Mr. H.C. Ellis, Mrs. W.H.S. Martin andMiss Lillan Crain.

In the 1950’s, as Chinese immigration to Ottawa accelerated followingthe change in immigration law allowing relatives of Chinese Canadiancitizens to come to Canada, the mission work grew. With good foresight,the United Church of Canada seconded Miss Winnifred Harris to serve withthe Association, following her many years as a Missionary to China.

On October 28, 1962, under the leadership of Rev Samuel Choo*, theChinese Mission and Christian Association officially joined the UnitedChurch of Canada. The Deaconess was Miss Evelyn Ricker who had been theUnited Church Missionary to China for many years. Those in leadership atthat time included Mr. and Mrs. J.R. McGregor, Mr. Paul Mclntoch, Mr.A.W. McVicar, Miss E. Johnston, Miss M.E. Roe, Miss E. Smith and MissAlice Mah. Rev. Stephen Liao left Winnipeg Chinese United Church in 1966to serve at Ottawa Chinese United Church (Miss Kathryn Wu assisting)until 1972. Rev. Wing Mak became minister in February 1973 and under hisleadership the church began to grow.

The numerical growth took place sometime in 1975 under the ministryof Rev Wing H. Mak. Indeed, the congregation outgrew 312 – 314 LisgarStreet facilities. The church moved to the Church Hall of the FirstUnited Church on 397 Kent Street. Rev. Mak departed in 1982 and servedas minister at Winnipeg Chinese United Church. Rev. Pervis-Smith, aretired United Church minister served as interim minister for a briefperiod of time. Rev. William Wan became minister in 1982, with Mr.Victor Chow and Miss Nancy Chen assisting. The church continued togrowth prompted a further move. On July 17, 1984, the Church bought thebuilding formerly owned and used by the Central Gospel Tabernacle on 600Bank Street, at a cost of $449,000. The building was then upgraded at afurther cost of over $150,000 maintaining a seating capacity of over500.

As a result of the decision by the United Church of Canada to permitgay and lesbian ordination, a large proportion of the congregation (over300 souls), including Rev. Wan, split from the United Church in 1989 toform what would eventually be called the Chinese Christian Church ofOttawa. The remaining faithful members continued to work at 600 BankStreet re-calling Rev. Mak in 1989. He remained until 1995 when he againleft OCUC. The church had no minister, meanwhile, Mr. Rod Bennett andfamily, having served as a Free Methodist pastor, had begun working withthe English membership and youth in late 1995. In mid-1996 Rev. T.K. Ngof Hong Kong Lutheran background arrived. His ministry was ended inDecember 1997. After Rev. Ng departure, Mr. Bennett was invited toremain on as overall pastor relying, of course, upon skilled andfaithful interpreters. He received a M.Div. degree from Tyndale Seminaryin Toronto in 1998. Since then, Mr. Bennett has journeyed slowly towardUnited Church ordination through studies at Queens Theological College,while pasturing the church. During this period, there has been steadygrowth, at times astonishing, as a result of recent surges inMandarin-speaking Chinese immigration to Ottawa, and God’s blessing, butthis growth has been tempered by equally astonishing losses due to thehigh-tech employment downturn as many of these new families had to moveaway to find work. Average attendance in the past three years has beenabout 100. Over 80 individuals have been baptized into the Christianfaith during Pastor Bennett’s tenure. Some long-standing members of thechurch remain, who were there when the church joined the United Churchof Canada.

Rev. Mel Newman, a retired United Church chaplain and minister, whois a member of Trinity United, has officiated at Holy Communion, Baptismand wedding services. Rev. James Christie of South minster United hasacted as supervisor and advisor to Mr. Bennett.

In December 2010 Rev James Chang became the church senior pastor.
